Elizabeth Sloan's Credentials :

Elizabeth Sloan, LPC, is a marriage counselor in the Washington, D.C. area, practicing in Maryland and Virginia. In her practice, Caring Couples, Happy Lives, she specializes in helping couples from their first date to their fiftieth anniversary. By preparing couples for marriage, and helping them rebuild when they are on the brink, she moves couples up the life happiness scale using the science of positive psychology.

She first knew she wanted to work with couples when she happened to wander into an international conference on marriage and family therapy in Dubrovnik, Croatia and realized she had found her calling. She has helped hundreds of couples, and is happy to say grateful couples send her snapshots with notes saying things like "Thanks for saving our marriage - without you, this photo would not be possible!"

Elizabeth’s specialty areas include helping couples who

- argue a lot
- have problems with sex or intimacy
- are dealing with an affair, online infidelity, or sex addiction
- are getting married and want to be ready to walk down the aisle
- are in a second marriage and there are complications

Elizabeth works differently than many marriage counselors, because she will:

- Tell you up front what we think you need and what we'll do to help
- Keep therapy brief
- Respect that men and women are different and have different outlooks
- Emphasize positive, concrete solutions

Elizabeth also trains and supervises therapists wanting to gain expertise in couples counseling.

She is a Licensed Professional Counselor, which is a Master's level mental health license. She is licensed in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. She is a Clinical Member of the American Association of Marriage & Family Therapy (AAMFT). She holds a Master's Degree in Marriage & Family Therapy from the University of Maryland's Department of Family Science. Her Master's thesis was on improving communication in couples.

In addition to directing her private practice, Elizabeth has served as past Clinical Director of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), the primary association for psychiatrists who treat children and adolescents with mental health disorders. She was instrumental in developing the Academy's Practice Parameters, documents that describe best practices in diagnosing and treating disorders in children and adolescents.

She also has served as past Senior Director of Outcomes, Research, and Quality at Magellan Health Services, a national health care company that manages behavioral health care for 1 in 3 Americans with health insurance. She developed and managed national programs in quality improvement, and performed research on the effectiveness of mental health treatments. She directed national programs for early detection and prevention of postpartum depression. The program linked 55,000 women to preventive services in one year.

Her vita and publications list are available by request.
